93 Years... In Loving Memory... He was born in El
Paso, Texas, came to East Los Angeles at the age of three. He was 25
years old when he entered WWII with the 3rd Infantry. After being
accepted to Officer Candidate School he became an officer, joined the
Blue Devils of the 88th Infantry Division and became the interpreter to
the General in command. After the war he earned his Juris Doctor from
USC and began his law practice. He married Ellie in 1955 and they had
three children, Cristina, Michael and Suzanne, who survive him. Later
divorced, they remained the closest of friends until his death. He was
the first full Mexican American appointed Judge to the Los Angeles
Municipal Court in 1957 by a Republican Governor. Two years later
Carlos was elevated to the Superior Court by a Democratic Governor.
Sometime later he transferred to the Pomona Court House where he worked
until he retired in 1979. He had also remained active with the USAF
Reserve and retired with the rank of Colonel. He then chose to contract
with Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties to arbitrate employee
disability retirements.
Throughout his life he was passionate about
playing golf, helping charities concerning disadvantaged youth, and
animals. Carlos was a past board member of The Crippled Children
Society and Pitzer College. He also founded The Boys and Girls Club
located in Pomona. June 15, 2009 Carlos died peacefully surrounded by
his three children, Ellie and the caregivers who loved him. The
grandchildren Zachary Lester, Alexander Teran, Maria, Sean, Jessica,
and Troy Enriquez will miss their grandfather. In addition, he leaves
behind his sister Juliette, niece Dolores and long time companion
Louise Elliott. He joked, he teased, and smiled at everyone up until
his stroke and coma. Come celebrate his life this Friday, June 19th,
from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, at
435 Berkeley Ave. and Bonita Ave., Claremont, CA 91711. |
